My Finished Wood Sign

I finally finished my wood sign! It took me forever to decide what I wanted it to say or if I wanted to use paper letters or vinyl. I decided on a simple one word phrase with vinyl. It definitely is inspired by the one I saw at Shanty 2 Chic!

I don't have a power saw so I had to wait until I could utilize my handy dandy dad to cut the wood for me.The materials used were:

2-planks of wood (whatever size you want) cut in half

wood stain in walnut

wood glue

silhouette SD and light gray vinyl

Once the boards were cut in half, I glued them together, one on top of the other. When the glue dried, I took a wash cloth and wiped on the stain. I used 2 coats but that is all to your preference. Once it was all dry I added my word. Seriously my simplest project yet and I love the way it turned out!

We had our ultrasound appointment this morning and received very exciting news! WE"RE HAVING ANOTHER GIRL! My husband and I could not be more excited! Kaydence has also been telling me for weeks now that I have her baby sister in my tummy. :) I am so excited to get back to crafting, sewing and I also have a dresser re-do coming up as well. Thank you all for hanging in there with me while I was MIA most of the time. Hopefully very soon I will be posting some DIY baby clothes and some fun stuff for the room.

Christmas Time is Here

I hope you all are having a wonderful December so far! I want to share with you all my home during Christmas time. I think my decor is my favorite during the holidays :)

We don't really have a mantle. We have this weird wall that separates our family room from our living room. It doesn't go all the way to the ceiling and has little stair steps at the end. An very annoying "shelf" to decorate. This year, my husband thought of adding these three trees to the top of it to add some depth. I love when he gets good creative ideas!

Added some oversized ornaments and greenery to my lampshades.

These last three pictures are all on top of our piano.

Happy December 1st! And a Giveaway!

It's December 1st and that makes me happy. One of the reasons being, I will be 12 weeks in a few days...so hoping and praying that the nausea will go away and I will finally get some energy back! I miss crafting, I really really do! I also miss sharing all of my fun projects with all of you. This also means that the weather is finally and hopefully going to cool down and stay cool here. Where I live it has been known to be 85 degrees on Christmas! Not hoping for that this year. And lastly, but most definitely not least, celebrating my Saviors birth. I love our Christmas Eve service at church. It is always such a great reminder to me of WHY we celebrate. What is your favorite part about December?

DIY Ornaments- Inspiration

I'm starting to get a little bit of my energy back and am really wanting to make sure I craft as much as possible for Christmas! I LOVE ornaments. I love how you can use them for so much more than just hanging on a tree. You can attach them to a gift, hang them from the ceiling with fishing line, stack them in vases...the ideas are endless. I am wanting to create a lot of ornaments this year for sure! On Pinterest, I have found a lot of cute ornament ideas that seem very easy to duplicate. Here are just a few of my favorites.

All of these can be done with scrap pieces of fabric or paper. Easy and inexpensive...my two favorite words while crafting! I made a few ornaments last night, but am hoping to get quite a few more done soon!

Healthy Strong Heartbeat

Today was my 8 week ultrasound, and as I noted in my last post I was a nervous wreck! I am happy to say that there is one baby with what the Dr. said has a "very strong, healthy heartbeat!" Those words were music to my ears!

Meet our little peanut. This baby is loved more than it could know already. Thank you for your prayers and if you wouldn't mind continuing those prayers. You all mean so much to me and am so grateful for you! I really promise I will get back to crafting as soon as I can. I have two duvets to finish up by Monday, then I am finished with those until further notice! So until then my lovely readers, have a beautiful day.

My Fears

This post is very different from any post I think I've ever written as I want to be very transparent and open with you all about my fears at the moment. First, I wanted to apologize for not blogging more! I am just so nauseous that it is hard to do much right now let alone anything crafty! I am really hoping to get some Christmas crafting done very soon and as soon as I do it will be up for all to see! :) Continued prayers for us and this pregnancy would be greatly appreciated. I have a dr. appointment on Monday to hear our little ones heatbeat and see them for the first time. I'm excited beyond words, yet nervous and scared at the same time. I'm not sure if I have shared this with you all but I lost my first pregnancy at 8 weeks. That was an extremely difficult time in our lives and with Monday being my 8 week mark it is hard not to worry. I worried like this when I was pregnant with my daughter too and she was born a beautiful healthy gift from God. I know that whatever happens that God is in control and He will be praised in ALL situations. Thank you all of my lovely readers for your sweet messages and comments. You all feel like a whole extra part of my family! I will post on Monday when I get home.

13 Days of Halloween Calendar

Hello hello hello my lovely readers! Today I have a fun, easy and very inexpensive craft to add to your Halloween fun! I have never used a 13 Days of Halloween calendar before but thought now that my daughter is 3 and loves holidays I thought we would star this year. My calendar was inspired by a picture that I saw in this months Family Circle magazine. Here is what we came up with!

The supplies were mostly things I had laying around the house. I used cupcake liners for the circles, punched out the cream numbers and used bags from the dollar store. I didn't happen to have a frame large enough to hold all of the bags, so I used a vintage window frame.

Inside each of the bags we put cute little notes of what we will do that day. For example, some of them say: carve a pumpkin, watch Hocus Pocus, go to the pumpkin patch, make cookies...the ideas are endless. This is such a fun tradition to start this year and I'm so excited we did! Are there any fun Halloween traditions any of you have with your family? I would love to hear about them! Oh my goodness I feel so late on this post, but I finally decided to take some pictures of my Halloween decor this year! So enjoy my little tour of Halloween at the Carter house!

These beauties I have had for a few years now. I made them by dying cheesecloth in tea, the wrapping it around dollar store glasses to make "mummy candle holders"

These vintage lampshades are my favorite flea market finds! They give that perfect creepy look with gauze fabric draped over them.

These adorable labels are printables from the Martha Stewart Website. I just glued mine to mason jars and put creepy rubber fingers and rats in them.

I added black vinyl bats to my vintage window that hangs in my living room.

This is my little raven that sits perched on top of my kitchen cabinets and watches me as I cook. :)

Some Very Exciting News

We're pregnant! We are super excited and I'm already tired! Haha! I know that I have been a bad blogger again lately with such sporatic posts, but I am learning to say no to certain things and will be back blogging regularly very soon. The baby's due date is around June 20, 2012 so I am very early on...so prayers for a safe and healthy pregnancy would be greatly appreciated! Love you all and thank you for sharing in this with me!

My Little Lovebug Turned 3!

Yesterday, Oct. 2nd, my precious little girl turned 3. For her 1st and 2nd birthday, I threw large decorated parties and was completely exhausted before, during and after them! This year I decided to just make it about being with family. In the morning, the in-laws came to our house then in the evening we went to my parents house. The little thing was still as spoiled as ever. :)

She told me on the way home from my mom's that she had such a great birthday! That's all I needed to hear! Happy Birthday to my sweet baby girl! Mommy loves you!

Moss Wreath Tutorial

I am proud to say that I made my first "halloween-ish" craft! I love wreaths and how welcoming and warm they make a front door feel. I saw this picture in a Ready Made magazine a while back and wanted to re-create it.

I was able to find some spanish moss at the Dollar Tree and had an extra foam wreath and lace on hand. So I am proud to say that this project only cost $1.00, and I have moss left over! These are your supplies:

-spanish moss

-hot glue gun

-lace (cut into a strip)

-foam wreath

This is a VERY messy project and should definitely be done on a towel or blanket or even outside. Take your moss and cut it into clumps. Put some hot glue on your foam wreath and stick the clumps of moss onto the glue. Continue all the way around and on the outside and inside as well. Easy peasy!

Once that is all finished, take your lace and pin it into the back of the wreath and wrap it around the moss as far apart as you want. When you're done you can add a nice little bow which I made out of a scrap piece of muslin. Here is how mine turned out.

It's a bit eerie and pretty all at the same time. What holiday craft projects do you have going? I'll be posting more very soon! Have a great day!

Let's Find A Cure!

Some of us may know about or know someone who has type 1 diabetes. JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a foundation committed to finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes. First off I wanted to let everyone know this is not a paid advertisement. This is something that is very close to my heart because it affects someone very dear and close to me! My 4 year old niece, Arianna.

She was diagnosed in April 2010. She is a spunky little girl who had to grow up so quickly because of this horrific disease. She was having to have her blood sugar checked numerous times a day by being pricked in the finger, then depending on the number of that having to have even more shots of insulin daily. I can't imagine having to deal with that on a regular basis, let alone a child.

Some great news is that she was recently given an "Artificial Pancreas" which is a pump that gives her insulin through a tube depending on what she eats. Her parents program the box and the pump (artificial pancreas) does all of the work!

Now to the point of this post! JDRF is hosting a Walk to Cure Diabetes on October 1st. My family is trying to help raise money for this amazing cause. Even if you can't donate, please visit the site and share some love! Every little thing counts. Love you all! I couldn't ask for better readers!

Fall is Coming!

My favorite season is fall! Even though I live in the desert and it is relatively short here. I think that the decor for autumn and halloween are probably my favorite part of it all. These are some of the amazing ideas that I may be trying for some new decor this year.

Looking at all of these pictures has made me want to o get my stuff out and start decorating! I must resist the urge...it is only the beginning of September! Colorful Stenciled Plates

Good morning all! I hope you enjoyed my guest blogger Stephanie from Spray Paint and Spit Up. She seriously is one of the greatest people that I have ever had the privilege of knowing! Thank you Stephanie for sharing your super creative idea!

I love colorful dishes. With my obsession with Vintage Pyrex, that is really starting to happen in my kitchen. A while ago, I had purchased these beauties at Anthropologie.

I love them! I love that they are all different colors and they add such character to any kitchen. Some of the plates that I have are just clear glass. no character at all. I decided to bust out my Martha Stewart Paints and put matching stencils o the bottoms of them. (Since they are dishwasher safe and all!)

Here are a couple of the colors that I used, Mint and Jonquil, along with Habanero and Sea Lavender. I used this stencil, from the Arabesque set.

And this is what I got.

I think it adds just the right pop of color to a plain old dish and super easy to do! Hope you all have a fabulous day!

Hi everyone!! My name is Stephanie I have a little budding blog over at Spray Paint & Spit Up. I like to describe myself as a new mommy & old wife with a mean creative streak. I do all sorts of things, but my main loves are photography, baking, and design. So how exciting is this?! I get to guest blog on Kristina's lovely blog! I can assure you I am probably way more excited than you! But have no fear, soon you will get so see more of Kristina's lovely projects, but today, we are talkin' cupcakes, so let's dive on in!!

A good friend of mine is currently pregnant with her second child {you can see her impromptu family photo shoot here} and wanted to reveal the gender of her bun in the oven in a fun way to her parents. So she settled on cupcakes that had *spoiler alert* pink in the middle and, knowing my love for baking, she asked me to help her.

So after a "test batch" {or two - yumm!} we got the technique just right. So if you've ever wanted to do a gender revealing cupcake, look no further than this tutorial!!

To start you'll need two of your favorite cupcake recipes. For the main body of the cupcake, it'd be a good idea to use either a yellow or white cupcake {we used french vanilla}. Then for the center of the cupcake, we used a strawberry cake mix - yes, you read that right...these are not from scratch, but hey, I've got a 3 month old and she has a 15 month old PLUS one on they way...we were okay with a box! But I will say in my defense, boxes rarely, if ever, enter my house...anywhoooo....

Mix up the yellow batter and your colored batter separately. You'll line your cupcake pan with paper liners, then scoop a small amount of the yellow mix into the bottom of each cup. Then, take a small spoon {I actually used a baby spoon} and put a dollop of your colored batter in the center of the cup. It will look something like this:

Be careful to only get the colored batter in the center or else the color will show through on the sides of the cupcake and that would kind of ruin the point, yes? So, once that's done go back to your yellow batter and fill the rest of the cup with it, so that it completely covers the colored batter {like so}:

Pop those babies in the oven and when they come out, they should look a little something like this:

Now, if you don't use enough batter on top some of the color will show through {like they did on some of mine} so just take care to cover them well, without over-filling the cups, or else you'll get flat cupcakes instead of happy round topped ones!

Okay, on to the fun part!! We used just a basic cream cheese frosting dyed in pink and blue to ice our cupcakes. I *LOVE* frosting...I say the more the better! So I generously frosted the cakes and added pink sprinkles on the blue and blue sprinkles on the pink. They came out pretty darn cute if you ask me!!!

Next, I worked on packaging. She was sending four each to her parents and her husband's parents, so I stopped by Michael's and picked up cupcake boxes from Wilton. They worked out really well to keep our cute little cupcakes safe from jostling...don't ask me how they will stay in place if the post office decides to turn the box upside-down, but I don't want to think about that.

We made cute little distressed tags that say "Eat Me" and I wrapped the boxes in cheesecloth. I think they turned out so great!

What's that you say?? You want to see the inside of the cake?? Okay, well, I suppose I could take one for the team and take a bite so you can see the inside.

IT'S A GIRL!!!!

Ummm...I seem to have misplaced the cupcake...

The New Martha Stewart Paint Line

I'm sure you've all heard about the AMAZING new products that have come out for Martha Stewart Crafts. Miss Martha has outdone herself again! She is my hero! You can see all of the new products here. It is all pretty amazing! The tool that I cannot wait o get my hands on is the spray paint converter! It lets you turn any of her paints into spray paint! Anyway, I was so excited to be able to get one of the stencils, paint and foam roller to update a project that I did earlier.

I finally feel like this project is finished. It always seemed like it needed something else. The color that I used for the stencil is Lake Fog and the stencil set is called Arabesque. All available at Michaels. Have you used this new line at all? What have you done? I would love to see it!

Crazy for Chevron

Ok, ok, I know this may be a little redundant, but i love Pinterest! The ideas and inspiration on there are just amazing! I have been loving chevron print items for quite some time now, but the things that I have seen on there lately have thrown me into a whole new crazy!

this nursery is just to die for! the bedding is so original!

I don't think I ever would have thought of using a chevron print on furniture, but this is amazing!

I know we've all seen this a million times, but I am in love with it!

And this chair...my goodness cuteness!

And by the way...if you haven't had enough chevron...Target comes out with a new line on September 13th!

DIY Coffee Filter Wreath

I love wreaths! I love how they can make a home feel so cozy and comfortable. I decided to make a small wreath with some supplies that I had on hand. I love the way it turned out.

Here is what you need:

foam wreath any size (mine was 9" bought at the dollar store)

brown coffee filters (you can find them at the 99 cent store)

straight pins

Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Walnut Stain

scrap piece of muslin for the bow

This project is really so simple, I feel silly doing a DIY for it, but here it goes...

Start with one coffee filter and pinch the bottom middle to make a flower like shape. Start on the inside of the wreath and pin the coffee filter to the wreath. Make your way around the inside of the wreath then start a new row on top of that row. I hope that makes sense.
As you complete each row, you start a new one until it is nice and full. Once you are finished pinning the coffee filters, take your distress ink and dab it along the tips of the coffee filters for a vintage look. You can then tie your muslin scrap or ribbon on the bottom and hang that beauty! I can't wait to change the ribbon on the bottom for the holidays!

Cost breakdown:

foam wreath: $1

coffee filters: .99

straight pins: on hand

muslin scrap: on hand

distress ink: on hand

Total cost: $1.99

Oh my goodness, it has been a week. In my earlier post, I said that I was in Vegas for a tax conference and came home on Thursday evening. That night we got a call that my husbands grandmother had some complications from a blood clot and was in the hospital, not doing well. Later that evening, we received the news that she had passed away. Friday morning we then took off to Northern California to be with some of his family. We made it home Monday night and I had every intention of starting some new blog worthy projects, but have A LOT of sewing to get done. I really really promise I will get some blogging done here soon! Thank you all again for being such devoted readers! I love you all!!

I have to apologize to all of my lovely readers! I have been such a bad blogger and I am sorry! I left on Monday for a tax conference in Las Vegas and have neglected my blog. Yes, you read that right, a tax conference. Some of you may not know, but I am a part-time tax preparer and bookkeeper along with being an avid D.I.Y-er :) Just so you can feel like you were there with me, here's where I was...

Now doesn't that look like fun!! Speaking of fun, we did have some of that along the way!

Mirror Obsession

I have a love for big, oversized, ornate mirrors. I really don't think that you could have enough of them in your home. I love how you can cluster them together to make a statement on a large wall, or just hang one by itself to stand it's ground. While perusing Pinterest, I realize that I see A LOT of amazing mirror pins that I thought I would share.

This mirror here is amazing and I promise if I ever find one just like it, I will own it...just sayin'!

The clustering of these is perfect! I love the different sizes and shapes.

These are adorable! I love the frameless look as well!

I really would love this one for Kaydence's room. So cheery and bright. Amazing detailing too!

So, how many mirrors are too many in one house? Is there a limit?

Drowning in Muslin

I really hope many of you found my duvet cover tutorial useful! I have gotten a lot of great feedback on it, so thank you! I had said in the post that if it seems too overwhelming or you just don't feel like taking the time to make it that you can order it from my etsy shop. Oh my goodness have I had an overwhelming response to listing it! I never ever thought people would love something that little old me made so much! It's VERY sweet and I don't feel worthy of the recognition that the duvet cover is getting. I honestly never thought that I would be making more than one at a time...but my thoughts were wrong. So I am sorry if the blogging has been lacking lately, but I am working my little fingers to the bone (gladly) with etsy orders and trying to keep up. Again, I am SO grateful for the opportunity that etsy gives to share my talents with people all over the world!

Home Tour- Kaydence's Updated Big Girl Room

The previous post of Kaydence's room is a bit outdated as we have done A LOT of changes to it. I think the only thing we have not done is change the wall color, and honestly that is only because I am too lazy to do it! I have to apologize for the pics because

I love how her room has turned out. It seems like such a toddler room now instead of a baby room. So fun and playful!

Looking Back

I don't know why I have been looking back so much lately at Kaydence's pictures, but it is really hitting me how much she has grown into a beautiful little lady. It's hard for me to remember how small she was and how delicate.

Watching her grow and having the honor of being able to hear her call me "mommy."

I can't wait to see where the Lord leads her in her life and am blessed to be able to guide her in her journey. I love you baby girl.

Children's Numbered Table

As you all may know from some of my previous posts, two things I adore are Pinterest and my Silhouette SD. I found the perfect table on Pinterest to use as a table for Kaydence.

I love how it is small enough for her to use, but still fits in with the style of my decor. My mother-in-law bought me an adorable table and chair set at a yard sale a while back, but the finish on it made it hard to clean. I decided to use this table for my project since it is out in the living room. Here it is before:

I used my Silhouette SD to cut the number stencils out so that I was able to make different fonts and sizes. I would have liked to do the wood stain on the top but once I sanded it down, I realized it was particle board. I painted the top the same color as my kitchen walls so it matches nicely. All in all, a great and pretty easy project!

Happy Spots in Our Home

The other day I was inspired by fellow blogger Rachel Denbow to look around my home and find the spots that make me happy. I have done a lot to it lately, so much of it makes me smile because it feel fresh.

1.) my cookbook collection. i love the colors that they bring to my kitchen. 2.) my doily family banner. this hangs over my mantle and reminds me of what's important. 3.) my little sheet music shelf. With my husband and I both being musicians, I like the way this adds a little personal touch to the room (love all my little nick-nacks too) 4.) kaydence's favorite toy right now. Mr. Potato Head cannot ever be put away. At least she gets all of the pieces back in the box when she's done :)

Beach Day

I've never really been a beach girl. I'm not sure why. I have lived 1 hour from the beach my whole life and have probably only been a handful of times. With that said, this has all changed since having my baby girl. My husband, Kaydence and myself went to Balboa last week with my parents and all I can say is that she LOVES the beach! She loves building sand castles, getting buried in the sand, the sound of the water and even the seaweed. Yep I said it seaweed. She brought me a huge strand of it and said "look mommy, a pretty flower!" I love that she can see the beauty in not so beautiful things.

This was on the balcony of Newport Landing having lunch.

She loved running from the waves with her daddy!

We will definitely be making many more trips back to the beach this summer. I have grown to love it!

Vintage Carnival Brial Shower

I love how you plan and plan and plan just to have a moment fly by so quickly then it's over! It did turn out exactly as I hoped for. My sister-in-law, Sara, is getting married on August 5th and I had the honor of throwing her bridal shower. We decided to do a vintage carnival style theme. Since it was a bridal shower, I still wanted to keep it as classy as possible. Here are some of the wonderful shots that Sara was able to get before it started. Enjoy!

A nice little welcome wreath on the front door let people know they were in the right place.

We had caramel corn and cotton candy on the entry way table as favors.

Okay, I know this cake is a little amateur, but it is my first tiered cake! :) I did however think the bunting made it perfect. I will be adding these buntings to my etsy shop soon!

The snack display was by far my favorite! I loved the cotton candy in the martini glasses. It felt so elegant yet so carnival...perfect! The vintage popcorn and peanut bags were also an etsy find found HERE.

Here are my fabric jar labels that served the mustard, ketchup and brown mustard. You can find them HERE.

I found these vintage carnival tags on etsy HERE. They added such a nice touch to the water glasses.

I made red and white pennants to hang throughout the house and a banner with her name to add some personalization.

The ADORABLE ribbons and little top hat were made by our cousin Kalie! So cute!!

I think all in all the bride looks like a happy girl!

Fabric Typed Jar Labels- DIY

I had the honor of throwing my sister-in-law, Sara's bridal shower yesterday. We went with a vintage carnival theme and it could not have went more perfect. (pictures coming soon!)

We served good old carnival food: corn dogs, shoestring fries, popcorn, cotton candy and peanuts. For the corn dogs I really didn't want to have the ugly condiment bottles sitting out so I wanted to make cute jar labels that had a vintage feel to them. These labels were inspired by labels that I saw at Anthropologie. They aren't for sale there, just typical ADORABLE decor!

So fun right??!! I love how you can put such a basic item in them and make it look cute! All I did for these was type my desired words in courier new font size 14, and print them on college ruled paper. Cut them in strips. For the fabric, I used osnaburg and cut it out in strips a little larger than the paper. Once it was cut, I pulled a few stings from each end to give it a frayed look. Once it was all cut and ready I simply sewed a straight stitch along each edge and that's it! This probably didn't even need a tutorial, but they were so easy to make, I wanted to share :)

Family Rules

I would have never thought of displaying our family rules or honestly even having set family rules. Obviously we have the normal rules in our house but I have been seeing some really adorable ideas for some family rules signs.

Some Recent Home Changes

I've been doing some redecorating to my family room lately. I've really been wanting more of a farmhouse feel in my home but for some reason that room was lacking. I got some great topiaries at my good friend's yard sale at a killer price and some more old windows from another good friend! Here are some of the recent changes.

I made this little welcome banner from coffee filters and using my slice machine to cut out the scalloped circles. Once it was all attached, I connected it to a burlap ruffle garland that I had made. I like the way it looks right by my front door. The vintage suitcase was $1 at my local Salvation Army.

I found the white hanging wall sconces at Ikea. They are actually for planting, but no one will know :)

I'm loving the way it has turned out. It feels a little more cozy. Always a good thing!

In a few previous posts I have ranted about how I LOVE Pinterest! There is one thing however that drives me crazy!!! All of the food! I have been on Weight Watchers for almost a month now and it is so hard for me to see all of this amazing looking food on Pinterest...the cakes especially! Pottery Barn Inspired Duvet Cover Tutorial

Well hello there! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! So many of you have asked me to do a tutorial on how I made my duvet cover. Silly girl that I am, I didn't take any photos while I was making the actual cover, but I will try to "re-create" the photos. This post is very picture heavy but I wanted to make sure it covered everything! This is the original photo I was inspired by.

This little beauty from Pottery Barn came with a $250 price tag which I was not about to pay. So I headed on over to my local fabric store bought my own fabric and went from there. I bought 2 bolts of unbleached muslin (with coupons of course) and used 35 yards of that. This is what I came out with.

I have a king size bed so I will give you the supplies for that size and you can add or deduct from that.

Supplies:

35 yards unbleached muslin

White Thread
Trim (for the ties at the end)

A LOT of patience!

Start out by taking 20 yards of the muslin straight off the bolt (still folded in half). Take that 20 yards and lay it out as straight as possible then start cutting your muslin into 5 yard pieces. You should have four 5 yard pieces.

Take each piece, unfold it so it is no longer folded in half and tear or cut it straight up the middle at the crease so that each 5 yard piece is now 2 pieces. You should now have eight 5 yard pieces. (I really hope i am making sense!!)

Now comes the most time consuming part. You take each piece and ruch it with your sewing machine (pronounced roosh). This means you take the fabric and pinch it along the edge as you're sewing it.

Do that to both edges of every piece. You can pin each one if you'd like but I got the same result without pinning and it saved me some time :) Once each 5 yard section is finished you should have eight nicely ruched pieces.

Now it is time to connect them all! For this step I did go with pinning to make sure they stayed in place as I was sewing. I pinned one section at a time. Once that part was sewn on I pinned the next and so on.

You should now have the top piece of your duvet cover finished.

The next part should be a piece of cake now :) Take three pieces of muslin, wide enough to cover the width of the top and connect them together horizontally. This is the back of the cover.

Once the back of the cover is in one piece, sew the two pieces together leaving an opening at the bottom. This is the part where you use your decorative trim. I chose a lace trim which I thought added a little elegance. Cut 12 strips long enough to be able to tie two together. These are going to be the ties at the bottom of the cover to enclose your comforter. Measure the distance you want between each tie, then sew six on the top and six on the bottom. It will end up looking like this...

Put your down comforter inside, tie up the bottom and voila!

I have SO many pictures on my computer in an "inspiration" folder on my desktop. It takes up so much room and it's hard to keep it organized. I've been hearing about this magical place called Pinterest. It's an online virtual pin board that you can "pin" any photos that you like on different boards that you create on your site. The best part is...you can ~~stalk~~ follow people and see what they are pinning! :) I am so addicted I can spend hours browsing at different DIY projects, home decor, nursery ideas, fashion...you name it!

Garden Fun

I LOVE to garden! There is just something about going out, planting a seed and watching it grow into something that you will eat! I love that it is organic and fresh and that Kaydence loves to garden with me.

I have 3- 4x4 garden boxes that go straight into the ground that house all of my vegetables.

My herbs are all housed in containers on my porch for easy clipping during dinner prep! :)

This is only my second year gardening but I'm hooked! What do you have planted in your garden if you have one?

Vintage Drop Leaf Coffee Table

We haven't had a coffee table in a while and I've been wanting one bad! It had to be the perfect fit for my living room. I went to a local antique store and found this beautiful maple drop leaf coffee table. It didn't need to be painted but for my style I wanted to. It was in perfect condition and very clean. Great price tag may I mention too!

Here she is waiting for her first coat of primer!

After priming I then used my go to spray paint, Rustoleum Painters Touch in Heirloom White, then distressed it a bit using a sanding block. Here she now sits happily in my living room.

I distressed this piece a little heavier than I normally do but am happy with the final result.

The drop leaf is perfect for making the table larger if need be...say for crafting... :)

I purchased a small wooden child's desk at my local Salvation Army and started with that. I will make sure to ~~make a big deal out of~~ post about it when it's all done. Vintage Dresser Makeover

I finished the dresser! I think this is my favorite restoration by far. I love it! Remember the piece I found at The Salvation Army...

Beautiful but in need to some TLC! So I sanded this one good! It needed a heavy sanding to get all of the chipping paint off. Once it was nice and smooth I primed it with spray Kilz primer. I had a lot of paints here and there left over from rooms and other projects, so I mixed 4 different paints together to get a creamy, grey, beige. Sounds weird I know but it's really pretty. Here is how it turned out!

I love the way the colors in this room pull together so nicely. Happy girl right here!

Most Recent Salvation Army Find

Last Friday, my friend and I hot the local Salvation Army for their 40% off day! I wasn't really looking for anything in particular just wanted to check out what they had. When I decided to move my craft room to the family room, I started slowly cleaning that room out to eventually turn into a nursery for our next child (no I'm not pregnant yet, just planning ahead). For those of you who know me...you know this :)

Anyway, I was wanting to find a long dresser to use also as a changing table. I was totally not planning on buying one yet but COULD NOT pass this one up!

It's from 1954 and has BEAUTIFUL lines! The detailing on this is perfect. The price was also perfect at $41.50! I could not pass this baby up. It's already sanded and primed and I'm hoping to paint it tomorrow! Once it is finished I will post the final product. I'm so excited about this one!

Vintage Carnival Bridal Shower Inspiration Board

My sister-in-law has finally met an amazing man! She definitely had to kiss a few frogs to find him but the wait was well worth it! I have the honor of throwing her bridal shower at the beginning of July. She is having a vintage carnival themed wedding and we will carry that theme throughout the shower as well. Needless to say I've been doing a lot of researching for inspiration to make this the cutest bridal shower ever! :) Here are some great inspirations that I have found!

Mother's Day Dinner

My mom is one if the single most special people in my life. Not only is she my mother, I can truly say that she is my best friend. I was honored to make dinner for her and my step dad tonight (it's his birthday tomorrow) so I thought I'd share my basic, yet inviting table setting.

I love this table cloth that I got just yesterday at a little flea market in a nearby town. Again, the red and turquoise...LOVE!

Putting fresh sprigs of Rosemary in blue mason jars added the perfect simple touch to the table. We had Rosemary Shrimp Scampi so it was nice to have that little extra fragrance.

It was all delicious and I loved being able to do this for my mom. I love you Mom!!

Vintage Side Table

I love little side tables and stands. I love how you can just put them anywhere and they look great! I found this little guy at a yard sale for $5 and had to take it home with me. It was in perfect condition just needed and updated paint job.

After a coat of primer then my go-to spray paint (Rustoleum Painter's Touch in Heirloom White) it now looks like this.
I decided to do a little more distressing than normal on this one to give it a strong rustic feel and am so happy that I did.

I am adding this piece to my craft area to house all of my craft books. I definitely need a place for those :)

Craft Show Nightmares, Part 2

Have you ever done a craft show that you thought was going to be the greatest show and you may sell out of your items? Been there done that! More than once. If you haven't read my Craft Show Nightmares, Part 1, you can read it HERE.
Now onto the story. This particular craft show was a little over an hour away from my house so that tells you I thought it would be great! I told my husband, daughter, mother in law and sister in law to come down and visit me at my awesome craft show! Once I got there I realized it was in a cafeteria like this...
and it was for employees only to peruse on their lunch break! Sorry I don't have a picture of my table, but I was a little discouraged at the time. I was sitting there next to a man selling basketball jerseys and a guy selling candy bars. Why do I not investigate these things before I do them? Anyway, my family was still coming down so that made me happy. At least I could chat with them while I was sitting there not selling a thing, right? No. They were asked to leave as soon as they arrived due to being a security risk! Mind you this company had nothing security-ish about it. It was a utility company. So my family, including my 1 year old daughter at the time were asked to leave. At that time, I wanted to pack up and get out of there...but no, I had to stay until the end because no one was allowed to leave! So not only was my day ruined but I felt mortified that my family had driven over an hour and got kicked out! I think this one tops the worst craft show ever. Tell me I'm not alone...anyone?

Finally Getting My MAC

As I have said before, I am a bookkeeper/tax preparer part time. Because of that, I have to work on a PC because of program conversions...blah, blah, blah. My PC has finally gotten so slow that I can only use it for work and nothing else! This makes me happy because now I can finally get my MAC!! Whoo Hoo!! I will be picking this baby up this morning and am SO excited!

Home Tour- Family Room/Craft Area

My craft area is done! I am so happy with how it turned out. I was a little nervous moving a craft room to the living room but i think it was a good move. Since this is in my family room we'll do a whole room tour.

This is my craft desk and cabinet. It's unbelieveable how much I was able to organize into these drawers.
Galvanized buckets are used to hold scissors, pens, etc...
We have had this vintage Victrola cabinet since we first got married 8 years ago and now it houses all of my scrapbook supplies and paper.

I love this print from The Wheat Field. It reminds me daily to smile. :)

Craft Area Inspiration

I had a craft room. The operative word here being HAD. :) We are trying to plan on expanding our family from 3 to 4 possibly next year. I decided to get a jump start on moving my craft room to a craft area in the living room. Our dining room table used to be in the living room which I said in another post mae no sense whatsoever, so I moved it into the kitchen area. Anyway, since I did that, my living room has no point...it felt empty and not used which felt like a waste of space that could easily be utilized. I decided to make that room my craft area. In doing that though, I need to be REALLY organized so that it doesn't look like a disaster area right when you walk through the front door. I'm still working on it but here are a few adorable craft room from which I am trying to pull inspiration from.

This one is so neat and clean an fresh feeling! I love the simplicity of it.

But I do love this one's bold colors! Might need to just admire this one from afar :)

This one is definitely pretty enough to go into a living room setting...

And I save my favorite for last! The vintage feel and the amazing furniture pieces...This is going to be hard!!

I will hopefully have the transition done by the beginning of the week so I will post pics then...until then, be inspired!

Library Card Catalog Inspired Cabinet

Welcome to all of my new followers from Burlap and Blue! I'm so excited to have you :) A couple of weeks ago I said that I was busy on a new poject. I came across this idea on one of my favorite blogs Life in the Fun Lane. This was such a great idea that I had to make one for my kitchen. For those of you that have "toured" my kitchen, you see there isn't a lot of storage space...this is definitely what it needed!

I picked up this basic dresser at our local Salvation Army.

Pretty basic, but I loved the legs on it and it has good lines! I decided to paint it the same color as our kitchen being that the wall it is directly on is adjacent to the kitchen...thought that would tie it all in :) The top 2 drawers has indents down the center which Ifilled in with wood filler and added some filing cabinet style handles and frames. This was the first time I've ever taken on such a carpentry like project soI am so glad it worked!
I printed up little labels on the computer with typewriter like font.

I am really happy with how it turned out and am thrilled you can't see the wood filler lines :)

I am a little...ok a lot... obsessed with the Fleur De Lis. If you come into my home you will see at least three in every room! I decided to make a simple throw pillow with a black Fleur De Lis on it for my chair. This pillow was made with a painters drop cloth that I had on hand and I used my Silhouette SD to create the heat transfer. I love how something so simple can make such a statement. Silhouette SD

Happy monday everyone!Everyone in my household is a little under the weather at the moment(...even my dog is sneezing like crazy)but I thought I'd share with you my favorite purchase in a very long time! I purchased the Silhouette SD a couple of months ago and am still finding fun new projects to do with it. This is definitely something to invest in if you are even the tiniest bit interested! They retail for $299 but are always available on ebay! If I happen to find a giveaway for one I will post it!

The first thing I made was jar labels for my pantry. LOVE LOVE LOVE them! I'm kind of an organizing freak so these are perfect for me :)

Then I got on kick of putting vinyl graphics on windows...now that is my new obsession!

I even numbered my dresser drawers with this little wonder!

I recently ordered some black flocke heat transfer material and fabric interfacing. I haven't gotten to use the fabric interfacing yet but I made this with the heat transfer.which is available in my etsy store here. :)

I can't wait to try the fabric interfacing as I am seeing some ADORABLE things made with fabric!

My New, New Numbered Bedroom Dresser

So this dresser may be my last painting project for a little bit because I decided to prime this baby with spray paint...with no mask! Mind you,I am an athsmatic who has also neumonia so this was probably not the best idea. After a pricey visit to the dr I learned that my lungs had an allergic reaction to the spray paint which is causing me to have bronchitis. fun! i know! So after being reprimanded by everyone around me I think I should probably not do that again...so until I get a good mask, no more spray paint.

Anyway, after all that said, I am SO IN LOVE with the way this dresser turned out. I painted it before seen here but have never been 100% happy with it. I decided to do a complete 180 and paint it a shade of white. The color is by Martha Stewart and it is called Elderberry. I will be painting my bedroom wall this color as soon as I am feeling better.

Isn't she lovely?! I couldn't be more thrilled!I used my Silhouette SD to make the cute little vinyl labels for the drawers! That is a whole other post about how wonderful that little machine is! That'll come soon enough :)

I've been really busy working on a new piece for my home so sorry I haven't been posting lately. I'm almost finished with my new kitchen storage cabinet which was inspired by Life in the Fun Lane. I'll be sharing that very soon! Today I decided to get out and look for some fun spring/summer like items. I've been wanting to add some greenery to my home for a while but never found exactly what I was looking for. A while back at Marshalls I found this little greenhouse but never had anything to put in it. Today I found this adorable little faux plant at Marshalls for $4!

The little number votives were also a Marshalls find for $.49 each! Couldn't pass those up! As I was browsing also came across this darling ruffle pillow which was easier to purchase for the price of $15 rather than make it.

I love finding great items for a great price! What have you found lately?

DIY Vintage Window Headboard

Along with being a DIY-er and craftaholic, I am also a tax preparer. I have a lot of clients that I have developed relationships with in my seven years of preparing taxes. One of my dear clients came on Tuesday and brought me seven vintage windows that she had picked up at a yard sale a while back. She used to paint them but has not had time to lately so she willed them to me. FUN FUN! Two of the windows had broken glass and I have been wanting a different head board so I thought "why not put chicken wire behind the windows, hang them up an voila!" Here is my little tutorial :) My beautiful stack of windows. First, sand all of the chipping paint off of the wood and clean the dust off. These windows were actually in pretty good condition so they didn't need a lotof sanding. I then sprayed my chicken wire with Rustoleum Hammered spray paint. This took away the shiny silver and gave it a worn vintage look. Staple the chicken wire to the back of the window and cut it to fit with wire clippers.

Hang it up! I didn't screw the 2 windows together, I just put them side by side on the wall.
I couldn't be happier with the turnout! My total cost for this project was $0!! I had everything on hand! Can't beat that DIY project! Have you made anything fun for free lately? I'd love to hear!!

A Touch of Spring

Here in the desert it seems like spring starts the end of January, but this year it has been in the 70's one day and snowing the next. I'm pretty sure we are done with the crazy weather and spring is here to stay! To welcome it in, I decided to add a few small touches of spring in my home.

This is a spring banner that I made using paper doilies and tea dyed coffee filters...and of course my go-to tool Tim Holtz Distress Ink!

I do have to say I'm a tiny bit obsessed with coffee filters right now...with saying that, here is a topiary that I made using more tea dyed coffee filters. This is a very inexpensive project but turned out so beautiful!

This little tree is placed under a cloche on my dining room table.

And this little setup isin my kitchen in front of my sink...the cheery colors make me happy while doing dishes...well at least that's what I tell myself :)

Kaydence's Big Girl Bed

So sorry I have been a little M.I.A this weekend. I have been very busy working on Kaydence's new bed. About a week ago I did a post found here explaining the need for a big girl bed but just could NOT decide what kind of bed to go with. The next morning I was browsing craigslist and came across a 1920's antique wooden bed. PERFECT! With my love for antiques and the pricetag, I had to have it! Another plus...it was only 20 minutes away! It definitely needed some work though...

As soon as I got home I got to work and have pretty much been working on it sonce Wednesday! I am so happy with the final result and Kaydence loves it! I also changed around a lot of her room so the post I have of her room tour is not so accurate anymore. Here is where my little princess sleeps now... It couldnt' be more perfect.

Growing Up Too Fast

So I think the time has come to move Kaydence into a "big girl" bed. She's been trying to sneak out of her crib the past month and today I caught her with both legs over the rails! There are a couple of reasons I'm not ready to do this...

1.) the selfish reason...bedtime will become a battle of wills

2.) the emotional reason...it feels like she's growing up too fast

I'm not sure what type of bed I want to do...here are a couple of cute ideas I've seen...

DIY Vintage Arm Chair- Repainting and Recovering

I was browsing craigslist one day for some new furniture for my daughters room and decided to look for a vintage style chair. I found this baby for a great price and was even able to get it for a little less :) I loved it...my husband...not so much! I think he thinks I am a Grandma from the 70's with the way he looks at me and my purchases sometimes. Anyway, I loved the bones of this chair and was loving the rattan sides. I knew with a little spray paint an new upholstery it would be perect! Um...reminder to me...I've NEVER completely reupholstered a chair before. So I went blog browsing and went to one of my favorite DIY blogs Centsational Girl and found her tutorial here. She saved me! So here is my own little DIY tutorial. Not as good as hers, but you can get the idea :)So here she is in her original state. Not horrible, but definitly needed updating!

First things first...remove ALL upholstery!

This was before I did the arms but it took me a while to figure that out :) So we have a little naked chair!

Next, sand and prime!

I used Rustoleum Painters Touch Spray Paint Primer...that is my go to primer for everything! Works fabulous!

While the primer was drying I started to recover the seat of the chair

I used the original pieces as a template for my new pieces. The batting and foam in this chair were in great condition so I didn't need to replace much.

Since I wasn't going to do the buttons and tufting, I filled in the holes in the foam with batting so that you didn't see indents when the chair was done.

Then you start stapling and putting the chair back together :) LOTS OF STAPLING :)
Glue on some trim...I used a vintage lace for the top and sides and made piping for the arms.

And then you have your finished product!

For the chair color I used Rustoleum Painters Touch Spray Paint in Almond. It's a gloss paint but it doesn't look too glossy to me. Then for the material I used a classic Brown Ticking Home Decor fabric. I could not be more happy with how this came out (and hubby is happy too) :) He really needs to trust me I tell ya!

Home Tour- Kaydence's Room

This is probably my favorite room of the house. It is bright, funky and colorful which all describe my daughter as well.

I am going to attempt to move her out of her crib into a big girl bed that her Papa is helping me make...wish us luck :)

I really do think decorating her room is the most fun for me! What room in your house is your favorite to redecorate?

Home Tour-Living/Dining Room

I recently rearranged my home to incorporate my dining table into my living room. It seems strange, but the way my house was designed makes no sense at all. There is a wall separating the family room and living room but the fireplace and tv niche is on the side where the kitchen is. That left us with one place to make our dining room...in the family room away from the kitchen. After four years of having the table there, I finally figured out how to move it into the living room without it being too cluttered. Here is the final result and I am so happy with it. I love how rearranging furniture can make it feel like a new place. :)

Looking at this room makes me remember why I love the look of a handmade home. What do you love in your home that you've made?

Home Tour- My Kitchen

I decided to take you all on a tour of my home. Today we will start with the room which I spend most of my time...my kitchen. I live in a desert town in California in a track house. Track housing has it's ups and downs for me...a down being that the homes are hard to make custom. We are thinking about enlarging the kitchen island soon...but we'll see. I think it has a very cozy feel to it. We recently repainted it light gray from a deep red which was a HUGE change but I love it!

Craft Show Nightmares, Part 1

I've done a few craft faire/farmers market type events before and have a had some great ones and some...um not so great! The not so great one that sticks out to me the most is when I was designing and selling baby wears. It was about a year and a half ago, I had just had my daughter and decided "oh it would be so great to make nursing covers, burp cloths, changing pads...etc" The problem I found with that is:

1.) it is a very limited market

2.) it's a very saturated market

So here's the story. I decided to take on all of the sewing that needed to be done for the new farmers market that was coming to our area. Being as excited as I was, I made over 50 changing pads, 30 nursing covers, and 75 burp cloths...among other little items. I was sure that I may not have enough so I was ready to sew more for the next week. HA! It was a total bust! I had a TON of people come by my booth declaring how beautiful everything was and what creative ideas...blah blah blah...only 2 purchases! Later that night I talked with some of the other vendors who said the same thing. Basically everything that was handmade was not selling and all of the "junk" was. (Some people set out yard sale type stuff...I didn't think you were allowed to do that...) I guess some people just don't understand the quality of handmade things. I LOVE them and would 99% of the time buy them over anything manufacturer made. Needless to say I quit making baby items and moved onto home decor...which I have to say I am a little more passionate about :)

Bedroom Deco Almost Finished!

i have been going back and forth with styles and items that i want for our master bedroom. i recently added the headboard and comforter. i was inspired by this comforter in the recent pottery barn catalog.

i would love it if i was able to spend this amount of money on a comforter but my love for DIY made me head t my locl fabric shop and purchase 35 yards of unbleached muslin! my finished result...

sore little fingers and all i am really happy with how it turned out!!

Tiered Table

I was scouting out the local salvation army and found this beauty! it was marked at $24, but everything in the store was half off that day! so i took it home for $12!!!!

i absolutely LOVED the pie crust edges and the metal tips on the feet. the color on the other had left much to be desired. i'm slowly starting to change out the furniture in my house to all vintage painted furniture and HAD to have this! my next trip was to the home depot to figure out which paint i wanted for this piece. i came across the martha stewart line and found that they have sample sizes that you can buy for bout $2!! i thought the color sharkey gray was perfect!

i am very happy with the outcome and will probably use this paint on many more projects to come!

Total cost of this project was right around $14!!

DVD Cabinet Makeover

My husband and I have had this DVD cabinet for probably 6 or 7 years now and i've never really LOVED it. I decided paint it white and give it a farmhouse feel with chicken wire in the door. Here are the before and afters and I can finally sy that now i LOVE it!

i have collected vintage ornaments over the years and disney ornaments as well. i feel like they can coexist nicely on our main tree.

our staple "twig tree." it stays here most of the year but just chages decor with the season.

for some reason this year i decided to keep this area all whites and crystals, i really think i'm happy with it!

some urns and jars filled with ornaments...i love this simple way of decorating!

1. The Gap Heaven Perfume

i have been wearing this perfume for about 15 years! i cannot find another one that i love as much anywhere! it has such a clean sweet smell and definitely doesn't break the bank. :)

2. Tim Holtz Distress Ink
i use this ink on EVERYTHING! i especially love the "vintage photo" pad but they are all lovely.

3. Rustoleum Painters Touch Spray Paint

this is by far the best spray paint that i have used. being a new furniture restorer (if that's even a word) this paint is the easiest to use and comes in beautiful colors. my favorite is the heirloom white.

4. Starbucks Soy Chai Latte

not much to say about this one other than it is heaven in a cup!

5. Caldrea Plum Nutmeg Soaps from Target

These are a new find and new favorite! They smell delicious! I use the hand soap, dish soap and countertop spray. mmm!
6. The Twilight Saga
i am not a big reader but these books kept me captivated! love the movies too!!

7. Making Memories Slice Die Cut Machine

i just recently got this and i am in love! the perfect handheld die cut machine!
8. SHOES

i really don't think this favorite needs an explanation :)

9. Pumpkin Cheesecake

all i have to say is that if you haven't tried it...you must!

10. Vintage Finds
i should have been born in a different era...i love anything old. i feel like it just makes your house so warm and cozy.

my numbered bedroom dresser

i have had an oak dresser since i was in jr. high, so i finally decided to paint it. for those of you who have followed my blog, you know i am obsessed with numbers. once the dresser was painted, it still felt like it needed a little something so i painted gold numbers on the drawers. it may seem quirky to some, but i LOVE it!

i decorated for fall a little early this year. living in california (the desert) to be more exact, it's hard to get into the fall mood when it is still nearly 100 degrees. i'm hoping that decorating will bring cooler weather! (hey...a girl can hope right)

i'm way too excited about decorating for halloween this year too, but my daughter's 2nd birthday is october 2. since we are doing an alice in wonderland theme, halloween will have to wait until the 3rd...she'll be having a halloween party next year :)

Let's Find a Cure!!

In late April of this year, my 3 year old niece was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She now has to get her blood sugar checked and insulin shots several times a day. I cannot imagine what this can be like for a 3 year old. On October 2 my family will be doing a walk for finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. This is now my second furniture restoration piece and I have to say that I am thinking I found a new hobby :) This piece used to be my step-father's when he was a child and he couldn't be happier to have this dresser in his granddaughter's room now. So here is the new piece that is now in my daughter's room. I also redecorated her room today :) I'll post pics of that tomorrow :)

My Little Munchkin

So for those of you who don't know Kaydence, I thought I would introduce her to you. Kaydence is my beautiful little girl who will be 2 in October.

She is seriously my favorite little person in the world. She is SO passionate about everything. When she is upset, it is true saddness and on the other hand when she is happy, her giggles could make even the grumpiest person happy. I know a lot of that comes along with being 2, but she definitely has more personality than I know what to do with sometimes :)
